On a Menorca villa holiday there is plenty to do, with two cities and miles of sandy coastline to explore. The island’s status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has helped to protect and preserve its natural beauty and to keep historic buildings intact. One of the most outstanding places to visit is the S'Albufera d'Es Grau Nature Reserve, a refuge for aquatic and migratory birds, plus it is one of southern Europe's most important wetland areas. Alaior is home to a beautiful long stretch of white sand beach known as Playa de Son Bou. A stunning spacious beach with crystal clear waters. Gin lovers can pop into the Xoriguer Gin distillery to sample the best Menorcan gins and perhaps choose a bottle or two to take home. Monte Toro is the highest point on the island and considered a sacred place. Here you will find the reconstructed monastery and the perfect spot to admire the stunning panoramic views across Menorca and the island’s coast.
The historic old town of Ciutadella is one of the island’s two main cities. Commonly known as ‘vella i bella’, old and beautiful, it is a city full of charm. Overlooking the harbour are the fortified walls of the old city, providing a real sense of history. Situated at the water’s edge is Castell de Sant Nicolau, a 17th-Century watchtower and from here you can see across the sea to the neighbouring island of Mallorca. The capital city of Menorca, Mahón, is built around one of the finest natural harbours in the world and has a blend of Spanish flair alongside English Georgian houses.
Menorca is the perfect destination for a family villa holiday. Many of the island's beaches are perfect for those who like to wander and to discover secret beaches. There are plenty of beaches that are perfect for families with children. There are miles of sandy stretches, flanked by calm waters, restaurants, bars and shops, making it a safe haven for all ages. With boat and kayak hire available, there is also plenty of space to play all day. If you fancy a day away from the beach you could visit Lloc de Menorca zoo, a small zoo situated between Mahón and Alaior. Here the children can learn about the animals that live on Menorca, and you can also see lemurs and macaques too. An Australian section contains wallabies and emus along with some reptiles. With many of the animals housed in partly open enclosures, you can choose how close you wish to get to them. The small Los Delfines Aquacenter water park in the resort of Cala’n Blanes has enough slides, tunnels, chutes and pools to keep the kids happy and there is also go-karting, a play area with inflatables along with a garden and picnic area too.
If you are looking for adventure you can head off sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving too. Menorca's stunning sea-bed has been a favourite amongst diving enthusiasts for decades.
If you wish to explore whilst keeping fit, perhaps walk or bike around the Medieval bridle paths tracing a coastal route for 185 km around the island, enabling you to discover hidden parts of the coast and some spectacular beaches.
